| I have always had an interest in art
but only as a leisure-time activity until about three years ago.
However, in my career as a professor, I found a way to incorporate
my love of art with academics by specializing in cartography, the
art and science of mapmaking. My emphasis was on the art and design
of maps.
About three years ago I had the opportunity to take some sculpture
classes with Robert Allison. I fell in love with sculpture immediately
and knew right away that I wanted to make a full time career of
it. Although my new career is in its early stages, I am thoroughly
delighted with it and look forward to many more productive years
as a sculptor.
I do figurative sculpture in terra cotta with styles that range
from realistic to impressionistic to abstract. My goal is to capture
the essence of the person or animal that is my subject and to
imbue my sculpture with that life force. At the same time, I am
fascinated with ambiguity and meaning in my work, and I want my
clients to be able to project their own interpretations onto the
pieces. I am always intrigued with the associations and understandings
that other people bring to my creations. My greatest satisfaction
comes when people see one of my sculptures and connect emotionally
with it immediately. Then I know I have done a good job.
